Downtown Kennesaw is host to the 37th annual Big Shanty Festival on April 21 and 22, 2012.  The festival combines the best of the rich heritage of Kennesaw and the Civil War era with today’s fun filled activities. Over 70,000 attendees will enjoy the more than 200 booths with arts & crafts, food vendors, merchants, and live entertainment.

This year’s event offers great entertainment on two stages and a variety of foods to please everyone’s palate. The Kennesaw Big Shanty Festival kicks off with a parade on Saturday, April 21, 2012 at 9:30am. The parade features floats, high school bands, marchers, and over 1,000 youngsters representing every sport association in the area. The Parade will start at Adams Park and continue down Main Street through downtown Kennesaw.

KSU needs your help!  The school is planning to create the world’s largest human peace sign and set a Guinness Book record on Saturday, March 31 during an event on the KSU campus green. The event is scheduled from noon to 5:30 pm and will feature live entertainment.

The day will begin with a 6 a.m. breakfast at the Trackside Grill in downtown Kennesaw; tickets are $20. At 8:30 a.m., a 150th anniversary proclamation will be presented at the historic Kennesaw depot; there is no charge to attend.

At 6:30 p.m., the museum will hold the Great Locomotive Chase dinner at the Trackside Grill; tickets are $100. At 8 p.m., the museum will be hosting “Dessert at the Southern Museum” featuring musician Bobby Horton, who will be performing Civil War era songs; tickets are $25 for those who do not attend the dinner.

Following the sesquicentennial, on April 14-15, the museum will be hosting “Camp McDonald: A Living History Weekend.” As part of the living history weekend, local re-enactment groups will recreate and interpret life in Camp McDonald, a Confederate encampment that was located across the tracks from the museum (where Kennesaw City Hall is presently located) during the Civil War.

This event – to be held on the lawn across the street from the museum – will be open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. both days. Admission is $5 for adults and $2 for children ages 4-12, while children 3 years old and younger are free. Tickets also allow entry into the museum, which will operate normal hours: 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. on April 14 and 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. on April 15.

The Kennesaw Easter egg hunt begins at 11am so bring the kids to hunt for thousands of colorful wrapped candy treats and goody-filled eggs (including a few “rare” eggs that can be redeemed for larger prizes).

The scramble will be divided into three age groups on three ball fields:
0-3 years
4-5 years
Ages 6 & up
A fourth field will be designated for children with special needs, or those who require assistance.

Children must be accompanied by an adult. Be sure to bring a basket or bag to collect treats, and don’t forget your camera. The Easter Bunny will be on hand for pictures, hugs and handshakes. Note: Pets are not permitted on the ball fields.

In addition to the day’s events, visitors have an opportunity to explore the museum’s permanent exhibits to learn about the General, a locomotive involved in the Great Locomotive Chase, one of the Civil War’s most thrilling episodes. The museum also includes a full-scale replica of Glover Machine Works, a locomotive factory in nearby Marietta that helped rebuild the South after the war.
