In addition to the day’s events, visitors have an opportunity to explore the museum’s permanent exhibits to learn about the General, a locomotive involved in the Great Locomotive Chase, one of the Civil War’s most thrilling episodes. The museum also includes a full-scale replica of Glover Machine Works, a locomotive factory in nearby Marietta that helped rebuild the South after the war.

Kennesaw’s Santa Parade always inspires delight and wonder for the young and young at heart. The Santa Parade will feature festive holiday characters, musical ensembles, designer floats, live reindeer and the jolly old elf himself, Santa Claus. The parade will last approximately one hour. Arrive early for a good viewing location and dress appropriately for the weather.

The parade will begin near the intersection of Park Drive and Main Street and proceed south and east down Main Street, marching past Cherokee Street toward Sardis Street.

Bring your camera and take holiday pictures with Santa after the parade. Festivities will continue near the Depot, 2828 Cherokee Street, with live stage entertainment, youth activities, seasonal vendor booths and sponsor exhibits. Admission is free.

A Christmas Tree Lighting program with live music and sing-a-long will begin at 5:30 p.m. in front of the Depot.

Free lunch will be offered to service members past and present at the Ben Robertson Community Center in Kennesaw on Veterans Day, Friday, Nov 11, 2011 from 12-1:30 pm.

“We want to take this opportunity to recognize the contribution of the men and women in uniform, especially those who saw combat,” said Kennesaw City Councilman Tim Killingsworth, himself a former US Marine. “Our military members serve to defend the freedoms we value and this is one small way to thank them.”

American Legion North Cobb Post 304 is partnering with Kennesaw city officials to host the lunch. Food is being provided by Bullfrogz on 3655 Cherokee Street in Kennesaw. All military service members are invited to attend and no identification will be required.

“Recycling benefits us all by keeping old electronic equipment out of the landfills,” said Judy Hobbs, event coordinator. “Everything we collect will go to the crusher and be completely demolished, including computer hard drives. So there is no danger of anyone recovering data left in a recycled computer.”

Items that will be accepted include computer equipment, small appliances, telephones, cameras, VCRs, typewriters, and fax machines. Not accepted are major appliances (refrigerators, washers, dryers, ovens, vacuum cleaners), tires, household trash, and non-electric equipment. TVs will be accepted with a fee.

“Dinner at the Depot” is scheduled to return to Kennesaw in the spring of 2012. Dinner at the Depot features live music and a variety of food trucks. Past (and some current) participants include Champion Cheesesteaks, Press for Time (paninis), The Pup Truck and Honeysuckle Gelato. The event takes place in Depot Park on Cherokee Street across from the Southern Museum from 5pm to 8pm. Grab some food to go or stay to enjoy the music and a picnic in the park.
