Veteran’s Day in Kennesaw
The cities of Marietta, Kennesaw and Acworth are collaborating to provide a special day of recognition for servicemen and women on November 11, 2009.
The city of Marietta’s annual Veteran’s Day Parade takes place in downtown Marietta starting at 11 am. Major General William T. Nesbitt, Adjutant General, Georgia National Guard, will serve as the parade grand marshall and keynote speaker at a noon ceremony on the Square.
The city of Kennesaw, in cooperation with the American Legion Post 304, will host a free lunch for vets from noon to 2 pm at the Ben Robertson Community Center, 2753 Watts Drive. Vets are invited to enjoy hamburgers and hotdogs served by Kennesaw city officials and Legionnaires and meet Congressman Gingrey.
In Acworth, a ceremony honoring military veterans will be held at 2 p.m. at the Veterans Memorial at Patriots Point. Major General George Harrison (Ret.), Associate Director of the Georgia Tech Research Institute will be the keynote speaker at the ceremony.
“Kennesaw wanted to provide veterans with a way to participate in both Marietta and Acworth’s events,” said City Councilman Tim Killingsworth, himself a former US Marine. “It is our privilege to offer former and present service members an opportunity to have lunch in Kennesaw after they attend the Marietta parade or before they attend the Acworth ceremony.”

Christmas Tree Decorating Contest
Whether inspired by custom or competition, the tree forest created by the City of Kennesaw’s Christmas Tree Decorating Contest has become part of the spirit of the season. Each year, businesses, organizations, schools and families from Kennesaw and surrounding areas converge near the Depot in downtown Kennesaw to decorate Christmas trees for all to enjoy. Some trees are decorated with a traditional theme, however many offer something new and unique, giving return visitors a treat every year. Trees will be judged on originality, creativity, use of materials and overall presentation. Contest winners will be announced at the Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony on Thursday, December 3 2009.
The City of Kennesaw Parks & Recreation Department will provide each decorating team with one 6′ live Christmas tree, one sign marker and one 110v electrical source (no extension cords will be provided). Decorating teams must provide imaginative and weather resistant ornaments and Christmas lights (colored or white LED outdoor Christmas lights are recommended). Keep in mind that trees may be exposed to various weather conditions, as well as birds, squirrels and other visitors.
The entry fee is $20 per team. Trees must be decorated by Tuesday, December 1 2009. The tree forest will be on display to the public through December 31 2009.
